Chew the Word – The Power of Spiritual Rumination
Joshua 1:8 (NIV)
“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Reflection
Many of us read the Word… but we don’t stay with it long enough for it to change us. The picture of a cow ruminating gives us a deeper understanding of how we are meant to engage with Scripture.
A cow does not just eat once and move on.
It:
eats
chews
swallows
brings it back up
chews again
and repeats the process
Why?
Because the value is not just in the eating, it is in the processing. In the same way, the Word of God is not designed for a one-time encounter.
It is meant to be:
revisited
spoken
reflected on
and internalised
until it becomes part of you.
The Spiritual Principle
Transformation does not come from exposure to the Word, but from engagement with it. When you ruminate on Scripture:
The Holy Spirit begins to reveal deeper meaning
The Word moves from your head to your heart
Truth becomes conviction
And conviction becomes lifestyle
Supporting Scriptures
Psalm 1:2
“…but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
John 14:26
“…the Holy Spirit… will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
Colossians 3:16
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly…”
Today’s Practice
Choose one verse you have read recently.
Then:
Speak it out loud – put it on your lips
Think about it throughout the day – in quiet moments
Ask the Holy Spirit – “What are You showing me here?”
Apply it – let it shape your response to situations
Return to it again and again.
Prayer
Holy Spirit,
Teach me to stay with Your Word.
Not to rush through it, but to receive it deeply.
Help me to recall it in my quiet moments, to speak it, to reflect on it, and to understand it.
Let Your Word move from information to transformation in my life.
Let it shape my thoughts, my decisions, and my responses.
I choose to meditate on Your Word—day and night, until it becomes life within me.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
Declaration
I do not rush the Word, I remain in it.
I return to it until it forms me.
The Word of God is alive in me, shaping how I think, speak, and live.
